Sensing Your Future Self
What would it be like to experience your future now?
Most people try to “see” the future: a sharper image, a clearer plan, a more perfect picture. But the future that actually pulls you forward isn’t just visual.
It’s sensory. It’s emotional. It’s embodied.
When your future self becomes vivid, it becomes compelling. You don’t need to search for motivation; you feel drawn forward.
Vision isn’t just a goal for the future. Vision is an energy generating system right now.
A compelling expectation of your future self eases your choices, steadies your nervous system, and gives meaning to the effort required today.
Recent research about the power of your “future self” is consistent. The more clear and connected you feel to a future version of you, the more you act in alignment with what matters long-term.
But vision alone leaves power on the table.
Make your “future self” multi-sensory, because your brain doesn’t just respond to pictures, it responds to experiences.
So instead of just asking, “What do I want my life to look like?” ask:
What do I want it to feel like in my body?
What does it sound like when I’m living it?
What’s the emotional tone of that life?
A Client Moment
I’m working with a long time friend and client who achieved what many people dream about.
He built up and then exited his company successfully. He has the financial resources to live forever however he pleases. He also has good health, great friends, and a family he loves dearly. But recently, he has noticed something surprising:
The energy he had while building his business wasn’t there anymore.
It wasn’t that something was “wrong.” It was simply that the big mission that had provided focus, challenge, and achievement had been met. The old vision he’d held had been doing more than directing his business strategy; it had also been fueling his life.
So when we started to reignite the fire, we didn’t start with a new set of goals.
We rebuilt a powerful, multi-sensory relationship with his newly imagined “future self.” He began practicing “Sensing the Future,” placing himself in a future moment where he’s engaging the world in the most meaningful new way, as determined by him.
He’d feel the environment around him, the way he’d move through the world, the tone of connection in conversations, the gratitude in his chest, the calm confidence of once again using his gifts and passions in all the roles that matter to him. And almost immediately, that powerful, driving energy returned, because the future became compelling again.
Why This Works
A vivid future self becomes one of the most powerful conditions because it gives you:
Clean sustainable energy, not short lived spikes
Better choices, because you decide from your chosen “future self,” not your current mood
More momentum, because heartfelt inspiration replaces two dimensional goals.
And here’s the beautiful part:
When you practice sensing the future, you’re not just preparing for it. You get to experience it now!
When you’re generating the emotions and sensations you’re looking forward to experiencing later, you’re giving yourself the gift of enjoying them today.
“Future-sensing” should not be treated as one more thing to add to your list. Consider this the opposite of a burden, and appreciate the opportunity to deeply experience the future you desire for a few minutes. It’s something you get to do, not something you have to do.
I invite you to do this Sensing Practice 3 minutes daily:
Pick one role to sense each day: leader, partner, parent, creator, athlete, friend, or contributor.
Then:
Place yourself into the future, living in alignment with the life you have imagined.
Run the sensory scan:
What do you see around you? What do you hear in your voice and relationships?
What do you feel in your body, posture, breath?
What emotion is most present? Peace, gratitude, confidence, joy, purpose?
Anchor it with one sentence you write immediately:
“My future feels like ______.”
Keep it enjoyable. This is a mini-vacation into the life you’re building. If you’d like, share your sentence in the comments below, I’d love to read it
